EIGHT

After lunch, Lydia went home. She kept her phone’s volume turned up in case Taylor’s friend called her, but she didn’t get any calls or text messages all evening. She tried not to be impatient—she didn’t know if Taylor had even reached out to her friend yet, and it was very likely the other woman wouldn’t be interested in talking to a stranger about her neighbor who had recently passed away. It was a big thing to ask of someone she didn’t even know.

When the waiting got to be too much for her, she got back online and read the few updates on Kimberly’s murder that she could find. The police still hadn’t announced any arrests, and her family had posted a reward of a couple thousand dollars for any information leading to a suspect. She clicked on the post to read the comments, and spotted Noah Robinson’s name again. This time, his comment read, I will chip in $500 as well. We all want to know what happened.

Under it was a comment from Carter Robinson that read, Another $500 from me. #JusticeForKimberly.

Hadn’t one of them claimed to be dating Kimberly in the other post? She thought so, but wasn’t certain, so she clicked on Carter’s profile and scrolled to his friend list. There, she found Kimberly’s name. There was no relationship status, but if they had broken up, there wouldn’t be one. They had been friends for six years, according to his friend list. Just teenagers when they first met each other. She scrolled up to find Noah’s name under the family section of the friend list and clicked on it. He was in his mid-twenties, with a roman nose and curly brown hair. He looked nice. Earnest. She tried to imagine him killing someone and couldn’t. A little digging showed her he had been friends with Kimberly for only five years.

Was Carter or Noah the one who had been dating her? A little confused, but certain one of these men was the ex Brandon had mentioned, she returned to Kimberly’s profile and scrolled down past all of the recent public posts, her fingers crossed that when Kimberly changed her relationship status, it had updated her feed.

Sure enough, after a lot of scrolling, there it was. Three weeks ago, she had gone from In a Relationship With Noah Robinson to Single. She must have been close to both brothers, Lydia thought. According to Brandon, her ex’s brother—so, Carter—had been in the gas station the day she died, though he had left before she got off her shift. Was it a coincidence, or had one or both brothers had something to do with her death?

She clicked back to the original post about the reward, but she didn’t see any other comments that jumped out at her. Sighing, she exited out of the web browser and decided to start meal prepping for the week. She was too on edge to relax in front of the TV, and at least with cooking, she could get something productive done while keeping her mind busy.
